...is the name of the gallery in town which is showcasing one of my latest artworks, "Rosa". When I say 'latest' artwork I am using the term loosely - I first began work on this mixed medium painting in 2008. Not content with how the background of the painting was coming along (as in there was no background) I have put it aside using a good ol' 'i will finish it later' excuse. And so it stayed aside or leaning against, or shoved in between - gathering dust in my studio - all these years. Then I received an email from Phoebe asking me if I have anything recent I might want to show at their new Gallery. Nothing like a deadline for motivation! A week later I finished Rosa which I am now entirely happy with.

I first met Je T'aime in 2005 when we both got jobs with Auckland Max, a local 32-page magazine - I was a designer, Je T'aime - a writer. It was only after the magazine's closure Je T'aime and I became closer, periodically catching up for walks and gossip (you can do both, simultaneously!) or meeting at cafes for a cuppa and girly chit-chats; other times seeing each other at my place for vino and seafood platters (and yet another girl talk). During one of these visit I asked her to pose for me on camera, having envisioned her as a model for my painting. She happily agreed, and it didn't take me long to sketch her out - head to thighs - on medium-scale canvas. Then I decided it'll be fun to try out texture, though not as a background but through her figure... Few coats of paint later on top of the texture and I found myself stuck - unsure how to continue, and (because of being unsure) - quite unmotivated.

Je T'aime saw it only once, sometimes in 2007 I think. Even though I did mention that I was not done with it, I reckon she might have felt slightly mortified (I would have!). I imagined her being afraid I might offer it to her and it'll become one of those cases where she'd have to bring it up from under the house whenever / if I ever visited :) I decided to put it aside and not to let anyone see it, at least not until the day I'm finally done (and content) with it. Such a day came in October of this year - I woke up, made coffee, done a few rounds in the studio (very tiny rounds knowing my studio), took the painting off the wall, grabbed the biggest brush I own and... by the end of the day I knew I was heading in the right direction. The next day I finished off the background, the sides, and... phew... I was happy! A painting of Je T'aime, or 'Tem' as I named it, was finally complete. This year it was part of 'Artfest Tirau 2009 Exhibition' and I got a few good comments about it during the opening, which was lovely. But the main point was to be pleased with it myself, and that, I'm happy to report, I have achieved.
'Summer' and 'Rain':
On Friday 4th December I am going on a roadtrip to Tauranga - to deliver 2 of my paintings to the Harrisons Art Gallery for their annual "smalls" exhibition (all paintings are done on 10"x10" canvases) and to attend Gallery's evening event they've especially organised for all participating artists. Paintings will be hanged on delivery and available for purchase right away. This year exhibition's name is "My Favourite Things".

My 'Favourite Thing' is the story of 'that' fist - that first "Summer", first "Rain" (as I named my two artworks), a story of a boy and a girl. The first flirt, first dream... flowers, field, sky and storm... that's my theme for the show. I will attach the photographs of the exhibition and of my paintings in the next newsletter!

Meanwhile, if you will be in or around Tauranga mid-December do pop into Harrisons - this year's group exhibition (there will be over eighty canvases by national artists) should be just as interesting and capturing as the previous one (Szabolcs and I attended it last year for the first time and thought it was great - well presented and diversely entertaining).

Winner 1nd prize - Award for Portraiture “Tirau Artsfest Exhibition 2009":
My best friend Jane and I decided to attend Tirau's Artfest in October of this year together, leaving our other-halves behind (to bond in a cave... the cave realising itself in a form of Boogie Wonderland dance-floor until early hours! *giggle*). I was part of the exhibition for the first time and was looking forward to seeing the other artwork entries, as well as meeting a couple of artists I either knew personally or was going to be introduced to at the Gala Opening for the first time (not to mention we both like Tirau - a small town with lots and lots of character!).

We settled at the gorgeous Rose Room of the Rose Lodge, then done our walk through the town and got back to enjoy dinner and a glass of wine in our own private porch with a view of the rose garden in a sunset light. The Exhibition was right next door funnily enough (I didn't realise it when first booked accommodation), but even funnier - the judge for the Award was occupying the only other room of the Lodge or so our host told us!

So just as Jane and I done a round through the exhibition and I got to talk to a couple who came over to introduce themselves, Neil Sinclair (Mayor of South Waikato) gathered us all to say a few words and to announce the winners of the newly introduced Portraiture Award. And... well... I am pleased to share I received the first prize! Heather Leonard, an artist herself, presented me with a cheque (as a sponsor) and laughed once she realised we actually know each other - she didn't recognise me this time, where as years ago she represented me through her (then) Naked Art Gallery in Tirau. I am really fond of the memories associated with Heather, mainly because she was the first gallery owner to offer me representation and lots of space at her Shop / Studio Galllery - I think she genuinely liked my style and was great to deal with.

Jane and I were one of the last people to leave - it was a great night all around!

Stoneleigh Sculpture in the Gardens:
7 November 2009 through to February 2010Last year Szabolcs and I went to "Headland - Sculpture on the Gulf Waiheke Island" and enjoyed it so much, we are already looking forward to the next Sculpture Trial. It's coming back, again to Waiheke, in January 2011 - a bit of a wait but certainly worth it... meanwhile a visit to the Auckland Botanical Gardens (which we have never been to before) could be a nice afternoon out!

The exhibition features 20 sculptures by top New Zealand artists on a 1.8km trail through the gardens. Free entry, open 7 days from 9am to dusk. Free music on Sundays and guided walks every Wednesday and Monday.

Late Night Art:
A month or so ago Szabolcs and I went out to see an exhibition in Parnell that I was interested in. We got there at around 6pm but that particular exhibition left both of us slightly underwhelmed... we were done in 5 minutes flat. "What now?", we thought. As we strolled out onto Parnell Road we noticed that all the Galleries are brightly lighten and having openings. And so for the next hour or so we've checked out 3 more exhibitions, chatted to some gallery owners, participated in the 'silent auction' in Sanderson Gallery (which we won!), enjoyed some great wine and absorbed plenty of pleasant atmosphere!

I was beginning to research how to time it so that we yet again catch out a number of Galleries having openings on the same night, just to repeat the experience... That's when I read somewhere that Parnell is offering 'late night art' - Art and Music on Parnell Road, second Thursday of each month with Galleries being open until 7.30pm. Next such night is on the 10th December, and we are both looking forward to it!

I don't know anything about the artist, other than that he is a 19-year-old from South Korea... The only other info on his Profile page is this: "English is not my first language, so please understand if I have mistake with sentence" ... I really like his work - loose in its execution but precise in its outcome; experimental and spontaneous in its style but thoughtful of how it may be viewed as a result. Simply gorgeous.

Last month my husband and I were invited to the birthday party of a friend of ours, and even though I thought long and hard "what on earth do we get her as Oh-So-Special and Oh-So-Memorable present", nothing too exciting was popping up... until the morning of the party. I decided that bubbly won't do (probably will get consumed by one of the guests), and that the card with the usual "Happy happy 40th!!!" dribble will get packed away and quickly forgotten (and rightfully so)... OH yeah! *I thought* I know! I will paint her one of my small paintings!

...Although it's been a while since I finished an artwork in one siting I felt strangely confident at having a go. If it didn't work out, then there is still a liquor store around a corner - they sell bubbly AND cards all in one - sorted! I had 4 hours until I had to get dressed and leave for the party. No pressure!

Now, for those of you who don't know me - I would not, ever, call my painting complete if I wasn't 110% happy with it and I would certainly not give someone a painting (or try to sell one) if I wasn't myself content with it, if I couldn't say I'd have that painting on my own wall and be proud of it... Just saying - I was well aware that my cunning plan may not work out.

However, three hours later I was done, our friend's painting was finished and drying and I was very, very pleased with it. Luckily, so was our friend.

Moral of the story?
If you put your mind to it, it's possible to finish a (great) painting in less time then you think (deadlines work well in any job, don't they?)
However:
Plan. Presents. In. Advance!

Blast from the past:
About a year ago I finally made my way to the well stocked Factory Frames to get 8 paper collages I made in 1995, during my first year at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design, professionally framed. I can't recall what the assignment was, but of the finished result - paper / photo / pastel collage x8 pieces - I am very fond. Myself and my (then) partner asked the neighbours if we could use their kids trampoline. He jumped, I photographed... then, over the next couple of days, I collected, cropped and chopped old photos of the forests and trees, while photocopied others, then glued all together. Using children's colour pencils and pastels, I completed what was my vision of the artwork. I do remember loving the final result for reminding me of my dreams in which I could ...float of sort. Not quite fly, but be as light as feather, be weightless. I love this artwork, as old as it is, and wanted to share it with you.
I named it "Lehko" (click on the image to view larger scale).
I have recently decided to go with the original idea and do some more of the same. But of course nothing is ever the same, so look forward to seeing where it'll lead me...

Sales:
I got a number of phone calls / emails in the past couple of months with great news of sales of my artwork which (as any artist would tell you) is highly pleasant news. Often I get asked if I feel sad to be parting with my work and I must say - not at all. Once upon the time I would have never believed that my answer would ever be "not at all"... sounds a bit cold? But through a very long but interesting process as an artist - from holding on to everything I ever made, to slowly realising how much pride I feel in knowing people genuinely love having my creations in their homes - I got to really appreciate letting go. And not just of paintings, but also of over-thinking, over-doing, over-planning.

Winner 2nd prize - "One Size Fits All" Exhibition at Thornton Gallery:
End of July I traveled to Hamilton to attend the closing night of the annual OSFA exhibition held by Thornton Gallery in Hamilton - each year New Zealand artists are invited to participate by submitting their artwork, all on a 25cmx25cm canvases (hence the name of the show).

I didn't know what I had won, just that I might have won something... Chocolate fish would have been fine, then I found out I've won 2nd prize (for my painting "Dreamer V")! With that I received an art supplies voucher by sponsors of the exhibition - Gordon Harris, and a diary.

Best news of all though (on top of I having sold 2 out of 3 paintings submitted) is that the President of the Waikato Society of Arts, Martha Simms, picked all three of my portraits as part of her personal 20 favourites (out of total 197 entries), which got mentioned in the gallery’s publication.

Here is a take of what Martha said: “The ‘Dreamer’ Series by Anya Veryaskina tries out ways of working within the square. These portraits stand out because they catch a unique personality behind the features while showing the painters mastery of colour painting and composition. The modeling is both exact and spontaneous. I sense the intelligence, the spirit, and the wit of the sitter who may in fact be the artist”

St Dominic's College Art Exhibition 29th – 31st May 2009:
I've received an invitation from Sheila Boddington to take part in what she hopes will become College's annual event – St Dominic's College Art Exhibition. Artists are invited to include up to 8 artworks, which is a very generous offer I must say – that's more then some artist have at their solo exhibitions! I offered 6, but mine are small portraits and can be easily mixed through the show. I'm very curious how it will shape up and what the venue will be like. The opening of the exhibition will be held on Friday, 29th May 2009. For information please get in touch with Sheila, she was a great help, friendly and lovely to deal with. She herself has been an artist for over 20 years... On Artsquad website she says "she never accepts ‘just okay’ when it comes to her artwork" which is a wonderful motto – I just don't understand artists who are ok to pump out work they themselves are not fully pleased with. Shouldn't it be just like with any other job – you wouldn't produce something half heartedly, of poor quality, and you wouldn't then try to sell it... There is a great saying: "Biggest enemy of great is good enough".

And so I look forward to attending this new exhibition and to hopefully seeing more of "not just okay" work by fellow artists, and maybe even meeting a few.

One Size Fits All Competition / Exhibition 2009:
Invitation for the above exhibition came from Collette Fergus, an artist, who along with Amie McCarron (a full-time artists herself) runs Artlist – an online independent guide to professional, established and emerging New Zealand artists. Collette also works at Thornton Gallery which will host the above show – a group exhibition and competition which has established itself as a successful annual event. The name of the show reflects the artwork requirements – size of canvas has to be strictly 10" x 10" (25cm x 25cm)... which is exactly the canvas size I have been recently working with and can't get enough of – never thought I could go back to working with such small scale, but that's what I love about it most now – dimension restriction allows me to concentrate on detail of the face I paint...

So I'm hoping to have 3 of my paintings as part of the show. If you are in the area or free to make a trip to Hamilton on Friday 31st July 2009, do come along to the exhibition closing night which will go from 5.30 to 8.00pm and promises to be ...umm.. special *ha!*. There will be quite a few participating artists – put the group together, mix in a little bit of alcohol (yes, I am having you on when I say "a little bit") – another night marked in my social calender!

Opening of the Hot Ginger Gallery, Kerikeri:
Szabolcs (my husband) and I ended up on a road trip over Easter weekend, aiming to attend the opening of Hot Ginger Gallery in Kerikeri (mentioned in my previous newsletter), and we are so happy we did! Read all about our trip, along with a small description of the "Once upon a Ginger-tree" Exhibition's opening night (+ photos) on my blog, here. Thank you / spasibo to Monika Welch, gallery owner, our host that night, a friend... we had a great time and will be back! Next time we'll explore Kerikeri and it's "world famous in New Zealand" Arts Trail – we have missed out on seeing any as all businesses were closed Easter Friday.

Last time I saw one of Peter's paintings was at the Adam Portraiture Award in Wellington in 2007 and to say I was a little bit shocked by his "Looking For The Origin Of The World" large scale painting would be an understatement. Here it is for your viewing pleasure:

I had no idea whether he was just "having a laugh" – in Ricky Gervais way – or was he going for shock value in an attempt to convey some sort of message... I wouldn't know, I had to move past the painting in 3 seconds flat. Word "uncomfortable" comes to mind.

Well, Peter's new solo exhibition is coming to the Whitespace Gallery in Auckland, so I shall go and see whether it'll be the object art he's otherwise recognized for, or something else entirely.

I will finish up by sharing a link to an interview with Belinda Eaton, whose realist figurative / portraiture painting I am a big fan of.
Belinda's style, while realist in execution, is free of traditionalist constraint, mainly due to her attitude in relation to the way she paints – as she says herself: "I just relax and allow the fun side of painting to come through with no expectation or judgment of myself, the painting starts to flow."

This also strikes a cord with me: "...my senses constantly being stimulated, any preconceived ideas challenged. For this reason I don't like the confines of the canvas or of perspective and more often than not my figures burst forth..."

Paintings of mine at the Helena Bay Hill Gallery:
I first met Peter Brown, the owner of the Helena Bay Hill Gallery, on one of the road trips my husband and I took through east coast of Northland many years ago. I loved their high quality art and jewelery which there are plenty of, as well as decorative products and creative designs for home and garden (including wood carvings and hand-blown glass). There is a perfect mix of various styles, not just an overpowering one or the other. Same goes for their choice of paintings - there is a bit of figurative, a few of abstractive landscapes vs traditional forms of representation, Kiwiana art and design (but of course!) and quite a number of sculptures - the gallery is positioned on a park-like ground which is perfect for presentation of outdoor art. And did I mention stunning jewelery? ...shiny things............. sorry, you lost me there for a second. So I was saying, I have delivered my first set of paintings to Peter a few years ago and will hopefully continue to do so again, as it's a fantastic place to exhibit - their location ensures a lot of traffic, not to mention that the place is well organized and Peter is great to deal with, as are his staff. And if not for art, come and experience this particular place for it's location if you ever in the area - they've got a cafe out the back and this is the view you get while you sip your coffee:

Welcomed to Hot Ginger Gallery:
Monika Welch is an artist friend of mine from Kerikeri, who is about to unleash her own Art Gallery onto the world, appropriately named "Hot Ginger Gallery". She is an almighty tornado of energy and I normally need coffee in large doses just to keep up with what she's been up to. Family / business / producing art of high quality - equally highly imaginative / traveling / keeping up socially etc... oh yeah, AND writing her monthly art newsletter! I don't know how she does it... If I think about it any longer I will get depressed as I 'm fully aware I work at 20% of Monika's production capacity, so I'll get right to the point: If you are passing Kerikeri do stop by and explore her new venture, it's promises to be great fun, quirky, inspiring...

I'm hooked!

If you take a close look you will recognize that my paintings reflect 30 years of commercial and technical illustration using a pen and India ink. Today my paintings reflect the same good drawing but with some nice colors thrown on top. I retired from commercial work (early thank you) to enjoy doing art my own way. And that is, painting till sunrise and sleeping late. Mmmm, it's all good. Please don't call before 9. – Tom Jensen
